Since the year of 1950 the Constitution of India and Indian officials have implemented many laws and regulations regarding the Caste System and discrimination of the "Untouchables".
In 1997 K.R Narayana was elected as President even though he was from an untouchable, from the Dalit caste. To this day Narayana is the only Indian President to come from the Dalit caste.
Over the 55 years that Casteism has been outlawed there has not been many issues in India's cities, but in the villages Caste divisions still exists and there is plenty of violence between higher and lower castes.
In the film "Slumdog Millionaire" the violence between Caste's is shown when the mother of the 2 Dalit boys is brutally murdered by what we are led to believe are anti-Hindu and anti-Muslim extremists.
Discrimination of dailts
In 1989 a law was enacted to prevent discrimination towards any Dalits.
The law also stated that it would be a punishable offense if any non-Dalits forced Dalits to perform any manual labor or for public purposes.
International human rights laws disallow caste-based discrimination and compels India to prevent, prohibit and eliminate this type of discrimination.
Discrimination of Caste doesn't only occur in India. Indians and Hindu's from various countries have claimed and reported to have been discriminated against from people of high social standings.
So even though this is an issue that needs to be readdressed in India; it needs to be noticed by all countries that Hindu's cal; home.
