Throughout my time building and researching for this website I learned a great deal about Hinduism and the Caste System all over the world.
The main thing I learned was that even though discrimination between castes is outlawed in India it still happens in everyday life.
After reading interviews and blogs from Hindu's living all over India I realized how big a deal it actually was for people to marry out of Caste.
One example was from an American girl who was staying with an Indian family. Her host mother was born into a Brahmin family but when she grew up she married someone from a lower Caste. This caused a lot of tension in her family and
they almost cut her out of the family completely.
what did i find interesting?
While I was researching the Caste System in other cultures I found it interesting that even when Indians move to different countries they stick with their family beliefs and stay true to Caste.
The Hindu's I read about that moved to Canada, England and the United States all identified discrimination towards Dalits as an ongoing problem withing modern Hindu's.
I also thought it was interesting that even though there are not any direct mentions of Hinduism in "Slumdog Millionaire" the symbolism in Jamal's life can let you interpret his social standing as he grows up.
